ABOUT

Monica Toole is a criminal trial attorney by day and an atheist, humanist mom 24/7. She was raised in a Catholic family, but while traveling the world and pursuing higher education as a young adult, she realized that religion was incompatible with her beliefs about social justice, gender equality, and science. She now seeks to work toward better inclusion of women and families within the secular community to diversify the voices of non-believers. Monica is Vice Chair on the Board of Directors for the Secular Hub in Denver, a chapter of the American Humanist Association. She started the blog, Happy Heathens, to help elevate voices for women, children, and marginalized groups within the secular community, and to improve strategies to make it safer and easier for women to identify as atheist, agnostic, or humanist free thinkers.
Monica rejects the notion that religion has a monopoly on family values and believes that greater diversity within the secular community will show a more balanced and stronger presence for us within society and in government, and ultimately contribute to better policy for all. The rise and threat of Christian Nationalism in the US has invigorated her commitment to protect the separation of church and state, civil rights, and efforts to combat the effects of the existential threat of climate change.
Monica and her heathen husband ultimately hope to make the world a better place for their four little, happy heathens.
